Sad news came from Poland: Professor Jan Ekier, pianist, composer and one of the world's greatest authorities on the music of Chopin died on August 15,2014 at the age of 100, just two weeks before his 101st birthday. Jan Ekier was the editor-in-chief of the National Edition of the Works of Fryderyk Chopin since 1959, which aims to publish Chopin’s works free of editorial additions and based solely on the genius creator’s hand-written manuscripts. Ekier's incredible energy and excellent health allowed him to finish the entire edition and live to see his work reach pianists around the world. One of the rules of the International Chopin Competition in Warsaw states that while it is permitted to use the texts contained in all available editions of Chopin's works, contestants are recommended to use the urtext in The National Edition of the Works of Fryderyk Chopin edited by Prof. Jan Ekier.
