Thank you's

The 2015-16 season concluded with a recital by Georgijs Osokins, a young pianist from Latvia, who replaced Nelson Freire due to his North American tour cancellation. It was a very impressive debut and we rarely see today's young pianists willing to take a risk in finding their own distinctive path. Osokins got a standing ovation and played for us two encores: Chopin Polonaise in A-flat major, Op. 53 and Rachmaninov' Prelude in G-sharp minor, Op. 32, No. 12. He is a pianist to watch out for in the years to come.

Now it is time to extend our deepest thanks to those whose support has helped us to run our series. We say thank you to all our subscribers, donors and single ticket buyers. Without you we would be not able to continue our series. This is the main reason that keeps us involved in running this Society. Thank you to our sponsor Tom Lee Music for providing a piano, Bob Bjerke for his countless hours spent on tuning the pianos, and to Daniel Le Chocolat Belge for providing the chocolates for our post-concert receptions. We also want to acknowledge the continued support of the City of Vancouver through the Office of Cultural Affairs, the Province of British Columbia and the Polish Consul. Lastly we express gratitude to our graphic artist, Barbara Tevarotto, who as an artist has done so much to define our visual identity.

The 2016-2017 Season

Let's focus on the first two pianists in our series. Every time we invite a pianist from Poland one thing is certain: that you will hear exceptional Chopin. Switala, Raubo, and Blechacz played unforgettable recitals for us in the past. The season's first pianist, Ewa Poblocka, is a versatile pianist and her repertoire ranges from Baroque to contemporary music recorded on almost 50 CD's for such labels as Deutsche Grammophon, Pony Canyon, Victor JVC, Conifer Records, CD Accord, and BeArTon. We are sure that you will enjoy not only Chopin but Mozart and Schubert too.

Among many brilliant Canadian pianists, one now finally has the legitimate claim of being called a chopinist. Charles Richard-Hamelin is the silver medalist at the 17th International Chopin Competition in Warsaw in 2015, the first Canadian ever to win a top prize in this prestigious Competition. He got a special Krystian Zimerman award for the best sonata at this Competition, which he will be playing in Vancouver. I hope that most of you will come for this concert to show support for this fantastic pianist. He has just been invited to replace Maurizio Pollini at the Prague Spring Festival on June 3rd. We hope you will not miss his Vancouver concert.
