Return of a Master
With the conclusion of the highly successful concerts with Tobias Koch, our thoughts now turn to another pianist who will be gracing the stage of the Vancouver Playhouse.
Those who attended Nelson Goerner’s last appearance with The Vancouver Chopin Society will not likely forget his electryfying and majesterial performance of Beethoven’s “Hammerklavier” sonata. Of his recording of that very sonata, Gramophone magazine, “Goerner is capable of exhilarating speed and searing heat. But throughout his Hammerklavier, it is the phrase, in all its infinite variety, that claimed attention.” Of Goerner the artist, BBC Music Magazine comments, “This Argentinian pianist possesses artistry of a very high order…Goerner purveys poetry as natural as breathing.”
Other than performing in prestigious music centres the world over, Goerner has had a long and fruitful association with the Chopin Institute in Warsaw. With the Chopin Institute, Goerner has in recent years been exploring the performance of Chopin on Pleyel and Erard pianos from 1848 to 1849. Recently, the Polish government awarded Goerner with the Gloria Arts Gold Medal for his services in promoting Polish culture.
For his Vancouver appearance, Goerner has planned a formidable programme of Brahms’ autumnal Klavierstucke, Op. 119, Beethoven’s Sonata in F minor, Op. 57 (“Appassionata”), Schumann’s Papillon, Op. 7 and Toccata in C major, and three works by Chopin – Nocturne in C minor, Op. 48, No. 1, Nocturne in E-flat major, Op. 55, No. 2 and the Andante spinato et Grande Polonaise brillante, Op. 22.
Nelson Goerner’s recital will take place 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 7th, at the Vancouver Playhouse. Seniors and BCRMTA members enjoy 20% discount off the regular ticket price. To encourage young people to attend great performances of great music, we offer an incredible $15 for young people from Grades 1 through 12.
We look forward to seeing all of you there, for what will surely be another masterful performance by a master pianist and artist.
